Disney gave the world a view of hyenas --- giggling, moronic henchmen and cowards.
Not even close. Hyenas are dark, sexual and vicious animals. Combine them with human
desires and you have a stunning group of wicked misfits whose laugh is a herald of death.

Facts About Were-Hyenas

• Unlike most were-groups, hyenas are matriarchal.

• They are often the street gangs of the city.

• Hyenas are one of the most violent, reckless and
sexualized groups known in the were-beast world.
Nudity, brutality, fighting and sex are rampant among
their clans.

• They are able to communicate telepathically among
each other in their full beast form.

• All ranks except Obo and Obar can only be held by females.

Power Structure

Wolves and Hyenas have similar power structure and place with a few differences.
Dominance is important among hyena clans. Members can move up or down by
winning or losing challenges against other clan members. Although most dominance
battles end when one participant backs down or taps out, leadership of the clan is
only transferred by a battle to the death. Orders can only be carried by those with
ranks in the clan, or those sanctioned by those ranking members. In order to vie for
leadership, a clan member will need to have a good amount of the clan backing them
and also be female. Should they win, if a majority of the clan disagrees with the victor
someone must IMMEDIATELY step up to fight or the succession is complete.

If an Oba dies in combat with anyone other than a kurciya, leadership transfers to the
Obo until a new Oba is determined. They have this leadership only until the fight for the
crown is scheduled. The Na Biyu, Na Oku and any others that wish to rise to the occasion
are expected to fight until two are left standing. Then those two must fight to the death
unless the other steps down. If this member is a Na Biyu or Na Oku and they submit, they
must return to the lowest rank of the clan unless deemed otherwise by their new Oba.
Whomever succeeds the throne has the choice to either marry the Obo from the former Oba,
or have them step down and take someone else.

To achieve the position of Na Biyu, Na Oku or Obar, one must either earn it with the grace of
their Oba or challenge those holding the positions. This is rarely ever to the death unless the
Queen permits it.

Mai Koyarwas are always appointed to newer hyenas in order to guide them through the
change and teach them control over their beasts. This includes having sex as kurciya, being
their sexual surrogates much like the Lukoi. The only difference is that they also teach the clan
knowledge of their origin roots as well as their culture. Newer members are expected to have
some culture shock and are allowed slight misdemeanors. Male hyenas are expected to protect
their females, but females do the majority of the hunting, dictate the social structure of the clan,
and are responsible for the immediate education of cubs (the youngest in the clan).

Greeting is not mandatory besides the Oba, Obo and all other ranking members, but is encouraged.
Greeting is usually done with minimal eye contact unless in a position of power, and a simple lick or
touch to the hands or neck. An Oba expects her ranking members to be able to meet her gaze until
acknowledged, lest she see them as weak. Any others meeting her gaze for a long period of time
would be seen as disrespect.

In order to ask the protection of a were-hyena, one must extend both hands cupped together with
palms facing upwards to receive the gift of their protection with both hands or should one be in
hyena form they must completely lie down before them with their heads tucked into their paws. To
accept, the were-hyena in question will either lick their upturned palms or nudge their head for
them to rise and accept any challenge or fight on their behalf. To reject, they will simply walk away
or stare until the were-hyena leaves.

Laws Of Conduct

01. All clan members must obey their Queen and King.

02. Any disrespect to those in higher positions will be met
with punishment. The severity depends on the transgression.

03. Upon meeting the Oba and Obo one must approach slowly
and make it known that they want to approach and wait for
the signal to come closer. The Oba and Obo will extend their
hand, and to finish this greeting one must lick their palm.
Greeting is not necessary otherwise, besides that of ranking
members, though can be done with a simple lick or touch.

04. A year after a clan member is “born”, they must complete a
rite of passage designated by their Queen.

05. All clan members must fight. This can be under any discipline
such as martial arts, boxing, swordsmanship, archery, and so on.
Being able to shoot a gun does not qualify and is seen as a
weapon for the weak.

06. To claim a mate, it must be done under the ritual of a full moon
with the entire clan present. This must always be sanctioned by
the Queen.

07. Do not willfully turn a human without the Oba’s permission. Doing
so will result in immediate execution. If done by accident, the Oba
must be informed immediately and the offender must accept whatever
punishment is given for their lack of control.

08. Clan meetings are mandatory for every clan member, regardless of
stature.

09. Do not harm other races unless attacked first.

10. Respect those of other races in power as one would in the clan,
especially in public, though you do not have to like them.

11. Don’t get caught if you are breaking a city law.

Playing A Were-Hyena

Were-hyenas are known as kurciya among one another and other were-animals.
The word literally translates to hyena in Hausa. All kurciya are descended from
the originals in Africa. Seeing as their bite is one of the more highly infectious,
there is a wide variety of kurciya beyond Africa. Even though hyenas are
somewhat choosy about who they turn, they have always recognized warriors
and tough-souled creatures to be accepted into their clans.

Kurciya are a savage race. Anyone that thinks that were-hyenas are simply the
rough and tumble class of were-animals are dead wrong -- they are actually
quite structured and lethal, though they don’t mind lulling others into a false
sense of security about their true nature. They are considered to be the most
primal, relentless and brutal of races. Strength is everything to them and if you
don’t have it, you’re not worth their time. Very self-serving, the world could be
up and flames and their peers could be crying for their help and they would still
ask: “What’s in it for me?” They are always willing to make deals should it benefit
them, and respect power when they see it. It doesn’t mean they like it. A deal
with kurciya is known as a deal with the devil.

Anyone wishing to turn a human into their kind must be presented to the Oba and
approved. Like the Tigers they will only grant those of worth into their tribe. Upon
one full year, if the member has survived training and the daily life of the clan,
they are to complete their rite of passage. Should any kurciya fail their right of
passage, the clan member faces possible banishment. Should the Queen choose to
extend mercy, the clan member will stay below even the lowest ranking male even
if she is female until she proves herself. If a member is turned, without permission,
the Oba will typically execute the one who did turn the one in question and offer the
new hyena a chance to prove themselves, especially if they were turned without
consent. If they fail, however, they are killed. A new hyena who was turned without
consent immediately has to enter a fight in the presence of the Oba. They are given no
training to prepare. If they do horribly they are killed, but if they kept going and even
tried to continue when it was too much, the Oba can grant them acceptance due to
showing their resolve.

Were-hyenas more often than not rough-house with one another as a sign of affection.
The more soft and gentle side of affection is reserved for the young, newer cubs and mates.
This does not mean they will be soft in training or shows of dominance. Claimed mates can
only mate with one another once established. Punishment for breaking these bonds is doled
out by the offended party, male or female. The act of mating is considered sacred to the clan,
looked upon like a wedding ceremony. The event is large scale since it is not entirely common
and usually done in the woods, set up with room to dance and play on the full moon day. The
newly paired is often the first to change under the full moon once their coupling has been
consummated. Oddly enough, Hyenas are free to mate with who they wish but their relationship
will not be seen as official in the clan’s eyes.

Sex with humans is forbidden unless one has the utmost control over their beast as their hyena
can often force its way through against the will of a kurciya. While not a law, punishment can be
given if a newly-fledged hyena goes against this. Were-hyenas prefer to go under the radar around
humans but have no qualms about staying hidden when among other weres.

If a were-hyena is killed in combat honorably, others of the clan will offer the parting words
“Ija rẹ ti pari,” meaning “Your fight is over.” Similarly, should one be wary of dying, they might utter
“Mi ija ti pari,” meaning “My fight is over.” Hyenas tend to revel in dying in combat rather than growing
old, though modern life does not often give them a chance to do so. This nicety is also offered to elder
members that die of natural causes, but refused for those that have died cowardly deaths.

Appearance & Attributes

Women hyenas are bigger than their male counterparts.

Their fur tends to be spotted but is also seen in tan, beige, orange, and brown hues.

Were-hyena jaws are stronger than most were-animals', to the point that they can eat
through the side of a Buick with one bite.

Beta Powers & Abilities

Herald of Death: Known for their particular laugh, Were-Hyenas have
the ability to use this chuckle as a means to disorientate and provoke an
enemy. The laugh appears to come at all angles, and when other Hyena's
nearby hear it, they join in and their strength feeds off of one another. The
enemy will begin to feel out of sorts, and if the laugh comes from the Oba,
they will develop a migraine that can infringe on their ability to fight.
